G19E is a 24-bed (growing to 48 beds) intermediate mixed hematology unit providing care to adult and geriatric patients ranging in age from 18 - 95. Patients treated on G19E include those with blood cancers such as Leukemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma and Stem Cell Transplants receiving complex chemotherapeutic and bio-immunotherapeutic regimens, management of treatment side effects and complications, and supportive care. Patients are typically admitted to the unit for a series of admissions at phased intervals. Side effects of the agents include significant GI complications, cardiac complications, renal failure, hypotension, and thrombocytopenia. Nursing interventions are focused on administration of oral, intravenous, chemotherapy, blood administration and other agents, and management of symptoms and side effects. Patient care also includes management of acute non-cancer related medical problems, cardiac monitoring, and transition to supportive care.
The ideal candidate will have graduated from an accredited school of professional nurse, TX RN license with a minimum of 12 months recent RN experience in an inpatient setting on a Medical/Surgical unit. Prior Oncology / Hematology experience a plus. BLS and/or ACLS certification required.
Shift: 7 pm - 7 am and 26 out of 52 weekends per year
Function: Manages patient outcomes by providing, coordinating and supporting clinical aspects of direct patient care across the continuum of care.
Scope: Impacts quality of patient care, patient outcomes and use of resources in a designated area in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
Essential Job Functions: Accountable for the management and provision of patient care in assigned area. Assesses patient's needs for nursing care and multidisciplinary team. Collaborates with physicians, other services, patient and patient's family to plan care and evaluate outcomes. Improves practice by integrating results and theories of research studies. Participates in data collection for current studies. Demonstrates clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies. Documents care according to established standards. Accesses, inputs and retrieves information from
Computer systems. Assures continuity of care through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services. Acts as a patient and family advocate in order to uphold patient rights. Trains, coaches and assists team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources.

REQUIRED EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
PREFERRED EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: No experience required.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: One year of recent experience in an inpatient setting on a Medical/Surgical Unit. Prior Oncology / Hematology experience a plus.
All clinical nurses with less than one year registered nurse (RN) work experience will be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program. Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification if working in the following department: Nursing Post Anesthesia Care Unit (600160).
