MD Anderson Cancer Center Accounting Specialist - Facilities Management Finance in Houston, Texas

The primary purpose of the Accounting Specialist position is to provide support to the Facilities Contract and Project Financial Services team (within the Facilities Finance department) in fulfilling its mission to provide accurate and timely project cost accounting and financial management services. Job Specific Competencies include assisting in processing and recording of the financial transactions associated with the implementation of design and construction projects, in maintaining electronic databases and physical records of financial transactions, and in responding to requests for archived records. The position requires strong attention to detail, exercise of judgment within general guidelines and application of practical knowledge of and experience in accounting systems and practices in the context of project cost accounting.


  1. Financial Transaction Processing and Accounting: Assist in processing project funding requests, requisitions, invoices, payment applications and other transactions typically associated with the execution of design and construction projects. Assist in the maintenance of project sub-ledgers and preparation of project cost reports to ensure financial controls are adequate to safeguard institutional assets. Verify issuance of purchase orders and update project accounting records accordingly. Assist in researching requisition, purchase order, and invoice payment status through PeopleSoft. Provide assistance to project accounting team members with respect to gathering and reviewing records needed to reconcile project costs to the institutional general ledger. Ensure timely submission of required reports/documents by tracking stages, alerting involved parties, and initiating response processes. Utilize various tools, such as Microsoft Excel and Access in completing assigned tasks.

  2. Records Retention and Management: Scan, image, upload, organize and maintain high-quality documents (including but not necessarily limited to contracts, design services proposals and approval, construction change orders, project funding documents, invoices, requisitions and purchase orders), adhering to divisional and institutional document lifecycle requirements. Provide post-scanning assurance to ensure documents are complete, organized, accurate, and of high quality. Archive inactive records in accordance with the records retention schedule. Receive and process requests for information and requests for documents from auditors, employees or others and maintain the requests via tracking logs. Maintain up to date knowledge on records management procedures and policies, which include document retention, retrieval, destruction, and disaster recovery. Assist in resolving problems in the record management process to ensure effective operations, and propose methods and/or procedures for improving document management system. Assist in controlling the retrieval of documents and with file migrations and audits.

  3. Other duties as assigned.

Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Three years experience in accounting related activities.

Preferred: Prefer three years experience in project cost accounting or related field, or two years accounting/clerical experience at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Salary Range: $ 38,800 - $49,500 - $60,200
