MD Anderson Cancer Center Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Pulmonary Medicine - Inpatient in Houston, Texas
The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) position is to provide direct medical services to patients within the education, training and experience of the APRN that are delegated by the supervising physician and in accordance with the policies established by the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff, and consistent with the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners and existing State laws. Working in a team that includes physicians, fellows, technicians, nurses, etc. to provide quality patient care in relation to the patient's described diagnosis, treatment, age group, development and other identified needs.
Performs histories and physicals for new and existing patients.
Dictates medical records in a complete and accurate fashion to meet billing and JCAHO requirements.
Reviews/orders diagnostic tests and imagine studies, with appropriate follow-up care.
Assists in the formulation and execution of treatment plans within specialty.
Manages common general medical problems.
Prescribes medications consistent with departmental delegated prescriptive authority protocols.
Performs procedures including ultrasound guided thoracentesis as credentialed by the Institution.
Manages patients with pleural catheter according to the institutional algorithms.
Provides patient education regarding the natural history of their disease as well as potential treatment benefits, risks, & alternatives to treatment.
Supports departmental research by obtaining protocol information appropriate to patient population.
Interviews patients and reviews the eligibility criteria to identify potential patients for protocol studies.
Attends the Pulmonary weekly conferences.
Attends the Division of Internal Medicine continuing medical education conference.
Master's Degree in Nursing.
May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003.
Preferred: Prior experience in an APRN role.
Preferred: Prior inpatient experience.
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION
Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
