MD Anderson Cancer Center Advanced Scholar - Division of Internal Medicine in Houston, Texas

The division of Internal Medicine is seeking final-year residents or fellows who may be interested in a career as a physician-scientist or clinical investigator to join the Advanced Scholar Program.

Advanced Scholar Program

The goal of the Advanced Scholar Program is to provide academically minded physicians dedicated protected time to concentrate their research efforts towards the ultimate goal of obtaining a faculty position with a clinical or translational research focus. The additional training offered through the program allows Advanced Scholars to concentrate efforts intensively in an area of investigation that may build on interests or studies they initiated during residency or fellowship. Additionally, Advanced Scholars will have a limited practice in the clinical setting to maintain clinical competencies.

The institution has an established infrastructure and programs that fuel innovation and breakthroughs in support of its mission to eliminate cancer.

Successful candidates are expected to:

  • Devise a hypothesis with specific aims and appropriate assays to answer focused research questions within a limited time frame

  • Perform high quality cancer research that transitions mentored projects into an independent research plan

  • Develop and maintain standard procedures and protocols to ensure the quality and integrity of acquired data

  • Exercise considerable initiative in planning and executing research with interpretation of end results

  • Plan, coordinate, and a carry out research projects in a collaborative team environment

  • Establish mentorship relationship(s) with faculty in a focused area of research

  • Participate in laboratory or other research meetings to present findings and discuss next steps

  • Produce first author manuscripts, present research findings at national or international conferences, and apply for and succeed in obtaining grant funding

Interested applicants must be currently enrolled in an ACGME-accredited or equivalently certified training program and should apply using the "apply now" link. In your synopsis, please include specific aims, research plans, publications, projected grant submissions or demonstration of sustained funding, career development plans and feasibility of completion of research within one year.
