MD Anderson Cancer Center Coordinator, Patient Access in Houston, Texas

The Patient Access Coordinator position in Access Operations at MD Anderson Cancer Center coordinates multidisciplinary care for patients with pancreatic cancer. The primary role is to provide clinical expertise in the overall planning and coordination of care for the pancreatic patient population, while assisting with upfront triage of these patients based on the multidisciplinary algorithm. Assists with medical and financial clearance using oncology nursing knowledge, clinical judgment and communication skills. Resolve difficulties surrounding patient access and authorization of services.

KEY FUNCTIONS:

  1. Coordination of Care:
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of clinical oncology. Directs plan of care with the patient and the multidisciplinary team. Coordinates and conducts patient and family education. Assesses needs for multidisciplinary support and organizes consults in the center and HALs in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Coordinates with Patient Access Service Representatives to obtain all diagnostics needed prior to consult including imaging, biopsy, pathology and outside hospital records.

  • Communicates with all members of the multidisciplinary team, patients, caregivers and documents patient calls and contacts in EPIC.

Facilitates patient tracking meeting with the multidisciplinary team to review and update patient's progress and status. After a care plan has been established the care will be transferred to the respective treating service(s).

  1. Outreach:
  • Effectively and efficiently communicates with referring physicians and/or patient or patient caregivers. Interfaces with physicians and outside institutions regarding patient medical records, staging, treatment plans and medications as appropriate.
  1. Data Management:
  • Collaborates with research nurses and research staff regarding scheduling of studies, status of protocols, education of specific protocols and assembling necessary data, as well as assuring eligibility for protocols and maintaining working knowledge of all pancreatic cancer related protocols.
  1. Process Management:
  • Evaluates the methods for coordinating assignments to physician teams. Responsible for participating on process improvement meetings as assigned.

  • Accountable to actively participate in task forces and meetings dedicated to improving communication.

  • Responsible for reviewing pancreas policies and procedures and for providing feedback related to the coordination of care to the clinical teams.

Salary Range: $68,800 - $86,000 - $103,200

EDUCATION:

Required: Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing.

Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Two years of experience in nursing or one year related nursing experience in utilization review, insurance, case management, or medical clearance.

Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required. Two years of experience in utilization review with external payors within a hospital or insurance setting. Two years oncology nursing experience would be a plus.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:

Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN).

Preferred: Case Management Certification, Certified Healthcare Access Manager, Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN), or other certification of specialization would be a plus.
