MD Anderson Cancer Center Director, Business Operations and Clinical Research Finance in Houston, Texas

Under the direction of the Associate Vice President of Clinical Research, the Director will be responsible for the development and implementation of a business strategy to adhere to budget and the provision of financing for the continual growth of clinical trials and ensure the financial success of the clinical trials operations at MD Anderson. The Director will determine the clinical research financing and coverage determination process of clinical research. The Director is responsible for developing and implementing institutional processes to ensure proper conduct of clinical research budgeting The Director will collaborate with Research Finance, Patient Business Services, and others to ensure clinical research billing compliance with UT System's guidelines, as well as federal and state regulations.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Function 1

Under the direction of the AVP of Clinical Research, the Director will be responsible for the development and implementation of a business strategy to adhere to budget and the provision of financing for the continual growth of clinical trials and ensure the financial success of the clinical trials operations at MD Anderson. Provides leadership and support for the development of clinical research billing enterprise. This includes the accuracy of the study calendar and coverage analysis for each clinical research study, negotiation of the budgets, review of charges related to clinical research activities to ensure billing compliance. The Director will collaborate with Research Finance, Patient Business Services, and others to ensure clinical research billing compliance with UT System's guidelines, as well as federal and state regulations.

Function 2

Responsible for determining the clinical research financing and coverage determination process for clinical research studies and developing and implementing institutional processes to ensure proper conduct of clinical research budgeting. Collaborates with the Office Research Finance, Patient Business Services and others to ensure the establishment and adherence a system of internal controls around clinical research billing. This includes the proper usage of CMS research modifiers, the proper capture and review of research related charges and effective monitoring of the activity associated with the clinical trial. Coordinate with Institutional Compliance on the annual clinical research billing compliance objectives. Provides compliance reports to executive leaders, as needed. Report deviations and corrective actions to executive leadership.

Function 3

Responsible for the management of the Business operations & Clinical Research Finance team. Directs and manages assigned staff, to include hiring, performance management, scheduling of work assignments, disciplinary actions, promotions, and transfers. Defines and communicates job descriptions, core competencies, performance standards and expectations. Establishes accurate and consistent productivity expectations and revises as needed. Coordinates regular staff meetings to communicate departmental and organizational activities, goals, and policies. Provides recommendations to Associate Vice President, Clinical Research as needed regarding organizational structure, resource needs and standardization of departmental operations.

REQUIREMENTS

Education

Required: Bachelor's Level degree

Preferred Education: Master's Level Degree

Experience

Required: 7-10 years business/managerial experience with at least five in a health care environment.

Preferred Experience: Strong financial or clinical research background. Strong interpersonal skills as well as written and verbal skills. Must have analytical problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Ability to work efficiently under stress with time limits imposed. Interacts effectively with a variety of professionals, administrators and support staff.
