MD Anderson Cancer Center Director, Innovation in Houston, Texas

The mission of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

This position is a key member of the Innovation leadership team responsible for creating an environment where staff and stakeholders are comfortable taking risks and brainstorming, using human centered design techniques, to recommend new ways of doing business. This position is responsible for managing a creative team focused on solving complex healthcare problems with emerging and disruptive processes and technologies in the Oncology healthcare space. This role will also support the Innovation Office in following engagement activities and outcomes including project scoping, prioritization/initiation; best practice/market research; data analysis; and digital health assessments. This position will work closely with the clinical and operational leaders, Information Technology, Clinical Engineering and other key operational and clinical departments and is expected to effectively leverage the existing capabilities in these offices.


• As an Innovation Leader, recognizes the factors that drive innovation in the healthcare industry and seeks specificity around the Oncology healthcare arena.

• Oversees a team responsible for the analysis required for new strategic visions, overseeing proofs of concept and business pilots/prototypes to determine best practices, processes and/or technological changes to disrupt the status quo and solve problems for MDA.

• Develop and oversee the creation of detailed communication plans with appropriate metrics for monitoring effectiveness of team work and recommendations.

• Fosters teamwork efforts to adequately participate in process/technology improvement and optimization for the organization.

• Assists with identifying and evaluating new opportunities and identifies appropriate commercial partners.

• Negotiates contract terms for new strategic relationships for the Innovation Office.

• Collaborates with the Office of Technology Commercialization, Strategic Industry Ventures, Business Development, Legal and Contracting to effectively vet and consummate strategic relationships for the Innovation Office. Assists management with creation of annual strategic plan and budget and monitoring of both throughout the year.

• Creates executive presentations and reports that supports development of findings and recommendations.

• Recommends and manages new strategic relationships for the Innovation Office and negotiates any deal terms required.

• Ongoing mentorship of team members enabling them to be engaged, productive and confident, ensuring they are ready to take risks, and be successful member of a highly performing team.

• Complete annual performance reviews in collaboration with each team member providing constructive feedback on their performance as compared against pre-defined goals/expectations.



Required: Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field

Preferred: Master's degree or above in related healthcare or business field



  • A minimum of seven (7) years of related experience to include a minimum of five (5) years experience in a health care related position.

  • Five (5) years managerial experience.

  • Prior consulting and/or project/program management experience helpful.

  • Preferred degree could account for experience equivalency.
