MD Anderson Cancer Center Director, Research Technology & Support in Houston, Texas

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

The Director, Research Technology & Support, is accountable for oversight of the associated customer support and strategy. In this position, the Director will oversee the Epic Beacon, Epic Research, Bioinformatics and Clinical Research teams, and closely collaborate with other IS Division leaders to plan, execute on, and support, research activities and technology strategic activities across the Division.

This includes optimizing of the portfolio and use of research systems, and rationalization of enterprise platforms through informatics and best practices, streamlining and optimizing workflow and system usage through process improvements and management engineering principals, and ensuring infrastructure planning supports the institutions research mission. The Director works collaboratively with leaders at all levels of the organization to develop policy and procedures, support and champion the digital experience, and to integrate data, information, knowledge, technology and automation for the purpose of improving health outcomes. This position ensures that these applications support and are provided in a timely, accurate, innovative, and cost-effective manner.

In carrying out the following functions and responsibilities, the Director of Research Technology & Support is administratively responsible to the Executive Director, Clinical & Research Solutions within the office of the Chief Information Officer and is accountable for overall use of the assigned systems to key executives within the institution.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Leadership/ Program Management

  1. Evaluates new technologies/software/vendors/architecture/services that may provide opportunities for solutions or new applications necessary to accomplish institutional goals, objectives and strategies.

  2. Formulates and manages department and service line strategy, goals, operating plans, and budget.

  3. Proactively resolves issues encountered during and after the implementation of initiatives, working with all levels of personnel both internal and external to the institution.

  4. Assumes responsibility, including overall budget performance, for the acquisition, development, installation, implementation, and maintenance of all assigned projects and systems support.

  5. Provides leadership and oversight of strategic initiatives and new systems implementation to include vendor assessment(s), request for proposals, project budgets, planning, testing, execution and support.

  6. Monitors and maintains GRC compliance on all assigned departmental applications.

  7. Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director, Clinical & Research Solutions.

Research Procedure and Technical Acumen

  1. Works with other leaders in the CTDO portfolio to plan for, evaluate, and ensure appropriate capacity of research infrastructure to include the high-performance computing cluster, research storage, and associated imaging research hardware & software platforms.

  2. Provides expert oversight of the research software portfolio for clinical, basic and translational research.

  3. Leverages research domain experience and expertise to provide insight and planning for people, process and technology improvement initiatives related to research.

  4. Closely liaises with the Enterprise Data & Analytics Leadership Team, the IT Engineering Leadership team, and the Chief Data Officer, or designee(s), to ensure alignment of people, processes, tools and governance of, and for, research data and support team data science principles.

  5. Continuously assesses the application portfolio and evaluates systems consolidation, application sunsetting and new, emerging technologies.

Relationship Management/ Customer Service

  1. Maintains relentless focus on customer service and partners with the user community on projects and services, especially in relation to their goals, status and expected outcomes, as well as overall information systems vision and strategies; keeping improvement of the digital experience as a primary objective.

  2. Coordinates/communicates effectively with Senior Executives, the Executive Director Clinical & Research Solutions, customers, peers within the IS Division, Managers (clinical and otherwise), Project Managers, Team Leads and Analysts/Specialists.

  3. Works collaboratively with internal customers, staff and other information systems departments to successfully plan, implement and support Research-related projects and initiatives.

  4. Provides oversight of vendor relationships and vendor issue resolution as needed.

  5. Works closely with business finance and revenue cycle teams to support and streamline clinical research billing processes

Resource Management

  1. Responsible for the hiring of Managers, Associate Directors, Contingent Staff and Analysts as needed.

  2. Manages the Research Technology & Support staff so that appropriate human resources are available and scheduled to accomplish priorities established by the CTDO, the IS Division, the Clinical & Research Solutions executive director, the Chief Data Officer and the appropriate research governing bodies.

  3. Coaches and mentors staff to serve as research advocates to all application teams, and as content experts to the research user community.

  4. Focuses on hiring strategies that serve to increase diversity, equity and inclusion within the department.

  5. Promotes opportunities to continuously improve technical capabilities, which include development, implementation, and ongoing support methodologies and processes.

REQUIREMENTS

Education

Required: Bachelor's Level Degree.

Preferred Education: Master's Level Degree.

Experience

Required: Seven (7) to ten (10) years of progressive information technology experience, to include five (5) years of recent experience in management. Extensive knowledge of how information technology impacts all facets of research and administrative areas with an aptitude toward developing a consistent vision and strategy that allows the institution to realize return on investment from information technology expenditures. Exceptionally strong interpersonal, written and verbal skills, and experience working effectively in a highly matrixed organization.

Preferred Experience: Over ten (10) years of Information technology management experience in an academic / medical environment, with a focus on research information systems and technologies implementation, support and optimization. Five (5) plus years leading people, projects, or teams supporting Clinical, Basic and/or Translational Research. Experience working directly with senior and executive leadership, and senior physicians and other researchers in a team-oriented capacity. Demonstrated experience working in a multiple (i.e., matrixed) reporting environment. Strong presentation skills and ability to present complex technologies, applications and processes to diverse audiences, including senior executive management and medical/research staff.
