MD Anderson Cancer Center Instructor - Translational Molecular Pathology in Houston, Texas

Essential Functions:

Assay Techniques:

Perform assays for protein and nucleic acid analyses, including spatial analyses,

from pathology tissues to reveal disease biology and enable characterization of biomarkers for early

cancer diagnosis and disease monitoring.

Computational expertise:

Guide the development of computational thinking, problem-solving

techniques, and familiarity with algorithm design and optimization. Use essential software tools, such

as programming languages (Python, R, etc.), data analysis platforms, and specialized software for

simulations or modeling. Perform efficient methods for data collection, cleaning, processing, and

storage, especially when dealing with large datasets (e.g., from genomics, machine learning, or

simulations).

In vitro model systems:

Maintain various types of stem cells under sterile conditions. differentiate

stem cells into specific cell types, such as neurons, astrocytes, or oligodendrocytes, depending on

research goals. Use of advanced imaging techniques (e.g., confocal microscopy, live-cell imaging) to

visualize stem cells and monitor differentiation and growth in real-time. Generate organoids or 3D

cultures from stem cells to model complex tissues or diseases in vitro.

Mentorship and guidance:

Teach trainees and research staff about laboratory techniques, safety

protocols, and experimental design. Help trainees and junior researchers develop technical and

analytical skills necessary for successful experimentation and data interpretation. Provide career

advice, support in publishing papers, writing grants, and navigating academic or industry pathways.

Presentation of Research Results:

Individual will travel to scientific meetings as necessary to

present results of experiments and make ready results for publications of manuscript/abstracts. In

addition, must prepare for publication in peer review scientific journals.

Preparation of Chemical, Reagent and Dyes:

Requires weighing, mixing and aliquoting a variety of

chemicals, reagents and dyes, some of which are noted as toxic and/or carcinogenic. Standard

laboratory equipment is used such as magnetic mixers, pH meters, balances, centrifuges, pipetters,

water baths, etc. Requires good visual skills and knowledge of the various chemicals, reagents and

dyes.

Requires maintaining meticulous record of experimental data and protocols whereby individual will sit

for long periods of time in addition to going to library. Will use computer analysis to provide slides

and graphs of data. Must be able to communicate in a clear and understandable manner.

Marginal Functions:

Read scientific articles and references. Communicate and collaborate verbally and in print with other

investigators at UTMDACC and other institutions. Use computer to record data and prepare

presentations of data. Read and retain knowledge of instructions for all machines and equipment utilized

in laboratory. Prepare and edit manuscripts, scientific presentations and abstracts. Must be able to

do library work such as searches and retrievals, use of TexSearch, BRS Colleague, etc.

Must be able to climb to reach storage area above head and bend to reach storage area below knee

level. Must be able to get very close to floor to work on equipment with screwdrivers, etc. and

retrieve dropped items. Must be willing to stand for long periods of time.

Work Location: Hybrid

This position has a target base salary of $ 65,000 to $ 80,000 and is eligible for incentive compensation, comprehensive health, wellness, time off, savings, and retirement benefits, as well as relocation support, as applicable.
