MD Anderson Cancer Center Medical Technician I - Specimen Processing - Sat-Tues 12pm-10pm in Houston, Texas

Specimen Processing is one of the first critical pre-analytical steps in laboratory medicine. Here patient samples are checked for proper identification, specimen integrity, and accessioned into laboratory computer system. Specimens are sorted and distributed to the appropriate testing areas. In addition to the trained personnel that handles specimens, our laboratory has an automated system for specimen handling. This system helps us to enhance our turnaround time performance by moving specimens as needed to centrifuges and then onto an automated delivery track. The laboratory operates 24/7. Specimen processing staff also processes, packs and ships a large volume of specimens that are sent to reference laboratories.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

As the lead technician assists the supervisor in all aspects of job responsibilities

  • Actively participates in training and orientation of new technicians to learn job duties and responsibilities

  • Administers and maintains competency testing documentation of all the training provided

  • Assists section supervisor with department functions

  • Communicates problems with Supervisor or Lab Manager as needed

  • Provides input for employee evaluations as requested

  • Independently performs work without undue reliance on others and assists co-workers as time permits

  • Keeps abreast of new procedures and policies

  • Maintains neat, accurate and complete records according to established policies and procedures

Performs all job duties in accordance with established protocols

  • Correctly receives, accessions, processes, and assures proper identification of specimens

  • Evaluates specimen integrity and notifies appropriate personnel of unacceptable specimens in

accordance with departmental procedure

  • Independently performs work without undue reliance on others and assists co-workers as time permits

  • Maintains neat, accurate and complete records according to established policies and procedures

  • Acquires and maintains proficiency in departmental functions

Completes all work assignments in a timely manner.

- Prioritizes and organizes workflow, meeting productivity goals of the section

- Adjusts to daily workflows and assists daily as needed

- Remains knowledgeable of processes and pre-analytical procedures enabling efficient trouble shooting

and problem solving

- Assists with monitoring and documenting of the sections inventory control system while assuring

effective use of supplies

High school diploma or equivalent. Three years of experience in a clinical medical laboratory or similar setting. With preferred degree, no experience requried.
