MD Anderson Cancer Center Medical Technologist - Specimen Processing - Nights in Houston, Texas
**This is a full-time Medical Technologist with our Specimen Processing department on a night shift (10:30pm - 7am). The ideal candidate will be ASCP certified.
Specimen Processing is one of the first critical pre-analytical steps in laboratory medicine. Here patient samples are checked for proper identification, specimen integrity, and accessioned into laboratory computer system. Specimens are sorted and distributed to the appropriate testing areas. In addition to the trained personnel that handles specimens, our laboratory has an automated system for specimen handling. This system helps us to enhance our turnaround time performance by moving specimens as needed to centrifuges and then onto an automated delivery track. The laboratory operates 24/7. Specimen processing staff also processes, packs and ships a large volume of specimens that are sent to reference laboratories.
The Call Center for Specimen Processing answers all incoming calls inquiring about the status of tests performed in the Core Laboratory along with specimen collection requirements for tests performed in the Division. In addition, the Call Center reports critical value, vital and nursing calls to health care providers on results related to Microbiology, Chemistry and Hematology testing.
Performs all laboratory testing specific to the assigned section.
Remains knowledgeable and competent for all policies, procedures and protocols.
Ensures and verifies quality control data is appropriate for the complexity of the reported tests.
Troubleshoots and maintains laboratory equipment.
Validates and evaluates new methodologies and tests. sets up connectivity with the help of technical support.
Follows section's inventory control system to assure effective use of supplies and reagents.
Demonstrates ability to perform all duties of the technical supervisor
(or designee) as described in LMPROC 4160 Personel POCT Laboratory Policy Standards.
Completes, verifies and reports testing in a timely manner
Complies with safety guidelines and procedures and adheres to regulatory mandates.
Remains responsible and accountable for all actions.
Enhances productivity and laboratory lab functions by demonstrating dependability.
Adjusts, prioritizes, and organizes work to achieve maximum productivity to meet the workload demands of the section.
Assists peers and supervisors with tasks after completion of assigned work.
Adheres to attendance policy, begins work as scheduled.
Works independently, utilizes resources available to maximize efficiency.
Assists in the development of laboratory personnel and tests, to enhance laboratory functions.
Accurately trains and competency checks nurses, OR staff, physicians, respiratory techs and other staff requiring the need to perform Point of Care Testing.
Participates in process improvement projects.
-- Validates database for new software or new tests implemented in the laboratory.
Coaches and mentors students and employees.
Manages all customer service interactions with diplomacy, actively facilitating resolutions to problems and addressing the needs of clients both internal and external.
Maintains proficiency on computer functions in the lab processes.
Properly acquires specimen data into computer system(s).
Analyzes and evaluates patient results correctly and appropriately.
Stores patient information and results to allow easy future access as required.
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor's degree -OR- Bachelor's degree in Molecular Genetic Technology -OR - completion of an accredited Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science program. With Bachelor's degree, one year clinical lab experience.
