SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the Nurse Manager position is to assist in overall clinical operations, staff management and the coordination of patient care and customer services. The Nurse Manager affects the patient care and daily operations of assigned patient care area.

The ideal candidate will have both Pre/Post Anesthesia Care Unit and Operating Room Nursing experience.

Operational Expertise

Maintain ANCC approved specialty certification: Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and/or Certified PeriAnesthesia Nurse (CPAN)

Clinically competent in OR/PACU nursing duties and responsibilities

Clinically competent in intraoperative nursing duties and responsibilities such as surgical technologists, patient care technicians, neurosurgery technicians, equipment technicians, etc.

Must have current knowledge and skills in operating and troubleshooting surgical equipment

Ability to anticipate scheduling conflicts and case needs in order to verify it with the scheduling faculty

Identify all stakeholders in the operating room and their interaction with the role of a nurse manager

Ability to build strong relationships with the physicians, vendors and other departments support the operating room

Willing to mentor and provide support to the staff under his or her services

Possesses deep understanding in operating room processes and efficiencies Post Anesthesia care and ASPAN standards.

Provide clinical expertise in supporting clinical research that involves the perioperative area following IRB and institutional protocols.

Possesses deep understanding in Post Anesthesia care and ASPAN standards.

Represent PACU/OR in institutional committees and projects

Provide leadership in Perioperative Evidence Based and Performance Improvement projects.

Provide clinical expertise in supporting clinical research that involves the perioperative area following IRB and institutional protocols.

Acquire and maintain ACLS certification prior to the end of orientation

Acquire and maintain PALS certification within 6 months of transfer or hire date.

Promote safe environment for the patients through safe practices that include but not limited to hand hygiene, aseptic techniques, and Isolation techniques.

Promote safe working environment for staff by identifying and implementing PACU/OR specific competencies.

Practices safely by adhering to all standards, guidelines, policies and procedures and serving as a resource for others with regard to appropriate actions.

Organizes workflow, appropriately allocates and lead others to utilize resources efficiently (time, materials, supplies, equipment, and personnel).

Demonstrate emotional intelligence while leading under pressure and handles crisis and difficult situations.

Competent in responding to emergencies (Malignant Hyperthermia, Respiratory emergencies, transfusion, and cardiac resuscitation).

Perform chart audits for completeness in perioperative documentation.

Able to objectively validate the performance and knowledge of all the staff reporting directly to this role.

Clinical Expertise

Supervises and facilitates workflow (contributes to on-time surgery starts, works to turnover cases as efficiently as possible); appropriately allocates/uses and leads others to efficiently use resources (time, materials, supplies, equipment, personnel).

Maintains stability in performance while under pressure and handles crisis and difficult situations without inappropriate emotionality.

Correctly identify the right patient, surgical procedure and laterality

Provide a safe operating room environment for the patient including but not limited to hand hygiene, sterile and aseptic techniques, surgical positioning, use of electrocautery devices, etc.

Operate applicable surgical equipment safe such as OR table, surgical lasers, sequential compression devices, tourniquets, and other basic OR equipment

Promote appropriate use of personal protective equipment related but not limited to infectious diseases, radiation exposure, and laser safety

Competent in responding to emergencies in the operating room as well as protocols during these emergencies

Use available resources including staff to facilitate daily operations, emergency surgery, and during institutional emergencies

Competent in nursing actions during common OR emergencies (Massive Transfusion Protocol, Malignant Hyperthermia, etc.)

Perform chart audits for completeness in intraoperative documentation

Able to objectively validate the performance and knowledge of all the staff reporting directly to this role

Expert knowledge of operational costs, participates in cost-saving strategies, and avoids wastes of supplies, resources.

Supervises and validate safe clinical practice by adhering to all standards, guidelines, policies & procedures and serving as a resource for others with regard to appropriate actions.

Demonstrates integrity and accountability by addressing breaks in technique and unsafe conditions.

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's degree in Nursing.

Preferred: Master's degree in Nursing or related field.

EXPERIENCE

Required: Five years of professional nursing experience, to include one year of supervisory experience in direct patient care activities.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Preferred: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
