MD Anderson Cancer Center Nurse Navigator - Ahmed Center for Pancreatic Cancer Research in Houston, Texas

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. The primary purpose of the Nurse Navigator position is to provide and coordinate individualized assistance to patients, families, caregivers, outpatient and inpatient staff in the coordination and communication of the patient's plan of care as it relates to research clinical trials. Provides independent, advanced research, education, and protocol-related clinical aspects of investigational trials in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, Houston-Area Locations, and external sponsors in order to achieve quality patient care and clinical trials outcomes. Scope of position is defined by the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas and requires adherence to the policies and procedures of the institution.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Facilitates the entry of patients into the Gastrointestinal (GI) clinical research trial program

Collaborates with the GI clinical research team to ensure patients meet trial eligibility.

Retrieves and visually reads patient medical records.

Collaborates with the business center to ensure patients are insurance approved to participate.

Facilitates rescheduling of patient appointments as needed on the patient's behalf.

Facilitates resources required for patient participation in GI clinical trials.

Initiates education and training

Provides education and training to outpatient and inpatient staff regarding clinical trial studies.

Reviews new protocols for consistency and clarity for patient comprehension.

Provides education to patients concerning GI clinical trials.

Documents in patient's medical record education and resource requirements if needed.

Develops collaborative relationships

Develops relationships with social services, business center, and other resources available at MD Anderson.

Develops resource relationships outside MD Anderson that can assist the research patient, such as reimbursement, housing, transportation, and outside medical services.

Houston-Area Locations

Collaborates with the Houston-Area Locations as necessary for GI clinical Trials.

Provides up to date information on approved GI clinical trials, eligibility criteria, and study requirements.

Provides education and training to Houston-Area Locations regarding GI clinical trial studies.

Develops an operational relationship with the Houston-Area Locations facilities.

Point of contact for the Houston-Area Locations as it relates to GI research.

Provides additional professional and ancillary staff education concerning research protocols by presenting in-services in Houston Area Locations.

Maintains a high level of professional expertise and credibility through educational programs

Keep current concerning oncology research through reading, attending meetings, in-services, and conferences.

Attends departmental research meetings and conferences.

Attends approved off-site meetings, workshops and conferences.

Participates in National organizations that are oncology and research focused.

In-services in clinic and inpatient units, other units as assigned.

Provides accurate information as requested to the multidisciplinary team.

Maintains appropriate license and certification.

Completes all mandatory institutional training requirements.

EDUCATION

Required:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing.

Preferred:

Master's degree in Nursing

EXPERIENCE

Required:

Five years professional nursing experience to include three years oncology nursing.

With preferred degree, two years Advanced Practice Registered Nurse experience in an oncology setting.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required:

Current State of Texas Professional Nursing License (RN).

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Preferred:

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
