The Department of Melanoma Medical Oncology (MMO) at The University of MD Anderson Cancer Center invites applicants for a full-time clinical appointment at the level of assistant, associate, or full professor. MMO includes faculty and staff involved in patient care and clinical, translational, and basic research focused on advancing knowledge and improving the outcomes of patients with melanoma. MMO is also committed to educating the next generation of leaders in this field through the Melanoma Medical Oncology Fellowship Program, Division of Cancer Medicine Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program, and weekly departmental meetings and seminars. The final rank of this appointment will be commensurate with the successful applicant's qualifications. We are seeking a highly motivated physician who has expertise in medical oncology, ideally with interest and experience in melanoma.

FUNCTION

This clinical faculty position is responsible to the Chairperson of the Department of Melanoma Medical Oncology, who reports to the Head of the Division of Cancer Medicine, will:

1. Administration

a. Serve on institutional committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings, which may include walking to each meeting site. Listen to deliberations and provide verbal or written updates, as necessary. Evaluate and summarize pertinent documents or proceedings that encompass committee functions.

b. May assume other administrative responsibilities as requested by Department Chairperson

2. Education/Teaching

a. Provide clinical expertise in patient care management and an appropriate research and teaching environment for medical fellows and residents who rotate through Melanoma Medical Oncology.

i. Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences, which require verbal interaction with colleagues and walking to meeting locations throughout the campus.

ii. Serve as mentor/advisor for research and clinical trainees.

iii. Contribute to the educational objectives of the Department and assist in mentoring fellows, residents, or other trainees who may rotate through the Division

3. Research

a. Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Department.

i. Develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping with the goals of the Department. Requires the ability to synthesize a myriad of information about the area of research. May necessitate (orally or in writing) instructing research support personnel in protocol implementation.

ii. Participate in developing a world-class operation that cares for patients with cancer, leading multiple innovative clinical translational trials, authoring high-impact papers, obtaining peer-reviewed and other funding, and developing educational programs for residents, fellows and visiting physicians.

4. Service

a. Represent the Department of Melanoma Medical Oncology in local, regional, state, and national matters about the field of medical oncology. This may require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and, upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by sharing with department colleagues verbally or in writing.

i. Practice internal medicine and medical oncology in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities.

ii. Must be capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations. Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's subspecialty.

b. Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients referred to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

c. Provide physician staffing for the appropriate clinic at a level commensurate with the level of training and experience.

d. Complete patient documentation for medical records with content and timeliness required by institutional policy. This will require dictation in clear, concise manner and visual review of patient and professional documents.

e. Correspond in appropriate fashion with referring physicians either in writing or by telephone regarding patient care, treatment and preventive management strategies.

f. Maintain excellence in current preventive patient management and therapeutic care through continuing education and development. This will include attending conferences in specialty areas and the assimilation/ dissemination of information in a collegial manner.

g. Provide timely and appropriate follow-up consultation in accordance with institutional policy. This may include close interaction with attending physicians in many departments both on and off the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center campus via the most appropriate method of professional courtesy and communication.

h. Serve as a role model in the Department of Melanoma Medical Oncology for all faculty, fellows, residents, students, and staff.

i. Provide peer review for assessing the clinical and research practices of faculty within the department.

  1. Extramural

a. Effectively represent the Department and institution in local, regional, state, national, and international affairs. This position will require travel in a scientific and professional capacity, and, upon return, timely debriefings will be provided in an honorable, forthright, and collegial manner with Departmental colleagues.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships including other physicians, patients, and subordinates.

This position has a target base salary of $287,044 to $508,649 and is eligible for incentive compensation, comprehensive health, wellness, time off, savings, and retirement benefits, as well as relocation support, as applicable.
