MD Anderson Cancer Center Physician Assistant - Dermatology in Houston, Texas

This position will be used to cover our complex high volume CTCL clinics and inpatient service(s) averaging 24-26 patients per day with 1-3 urgent same-say add on consults.

SUMMARY:

Provide quality patient care in relation to the patient's prescribed diagnosis, treatment, age group, development and other identified needs. Assist the evaluation and care of clinical research patients on protocols and manage the inpatient service. Provide direct medical services to patients within the education, training and experience of the physician assistant that were delegated by the supervising physician and in accordance with the policies established by the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff and consistent with the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and existing State laws.

KEY FUNCTIONS:

Must be able to independently initiate assignments without supervision. He/she must be able to understand and respond to telephone conversations with physicians and other members of the health care team, both within and outside of the institution. He/she must be able to clearly write and/or clearly communicate verbally person-to-person or over the phone. Must carry pager and respond.

Have access to all medical records that would normally be available to the physician. Will perform and record histories, physical assessments and progress notes with must be countersigned within twenty-four (24) hours by the supervising physician. Must be able to a complete physical exam and dictate an admission note. Must be willing to learn and perform skin disease assessments using SWAT and CAILS tools.

Order routine tests appropriate to the services provided under such orders. He/she must also be able to perform simple mathematical computations with and without the assistance of calculators including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Administer drugs ordered by direct personal or voice communication by the authorizing physician who shall assume responsibility for the patient's welfare, providing such administration or provision of drugs shall be in compliance with other state and federal laws. Any such verbal order shall be recorded by the Physician Assistant in the medical record and subsequently countersigned by the supervising physician within twenty-four (24) hours.

Perform routine admission procedures. Input patient information into the computer by typing on a keyboard all information as required. Must be able to visually read information on a video screen and/or on hard copy and prepare printouts of patient information using a computer and printer. Follow hospital patients, and monitors lab results.

Participate and collaborate on clinical research protocols. Interviews patient and reviews the eligibility criteria to identify potential patients for protocol studies. Schedule and conduct follow-up appointments, perform protocol related procedures such as skin biopsy, EKG, clinical assessments, and photography. Schedule and perform delegated medical procedures such as, but not limited to skin biopsy and excision, mole mapping, KOH preps.

Interviews patients for symptoms, side-effects, toxicities, and determines their grade pertaining to the investigational aspects of protocols. Calculate drug doses when appropriate, and fill out chemotherapy forms for signature. Measures films to monitor disease response. Assesses toxicity, grade and makes handwritten entries onto flow sheet or database. Assures protocol compliance and assists physicians as necessary. Has the ability to walk from his/her office to clinic and/or hospital nursing stations and then returning to the office.

Deliver education to patients and their families. Conducts in-service training for clinic and in-house nursing personnel regarding protocol requirements. Acts as liaison with patients, families, physicians, and other personnel.

Participates in education of medical students, dermatology residents and fellows, other Physician Assistants, and house officers. Instructs coworkers in allied positions in recording patient information and/or data entry. May supervise personnel in related actives. Works closely with the Research Nurse and clinical fellow to evaluate and treat patients on clinical research trials.

EDUCATION: Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), except for Physician Assistants who graduated from a PA program prior to 2013.

LICENSURE: All of the following: PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants. Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners. MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas. Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) , ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100).
