MD Anderson Cancer Center Principal Research Scientist-Endocrine Neoplasia & HD Research in Houston, Texas

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. The primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership and support for research related projects specifically focused on bone and muscle function in cancer. Apply technical expertise and scientific background to manage and oversee the research activities of federal, state, philanthropic and industry sponsored awards.

Oversees research operations including planning, conducting and overseeing experiments and projects. Manage laboratory operations to include laboratory safety, research compliance, maintenance of research protocols and records, staff supervision, and maintaining laboratory equipment and research spaces.

1. 1. Research Planning and Projects • Design, Develop and implement projects and/or programs.

• Drive new projects and programs and translate existing research into new opportunities.

• Determines the specific goals or objectives to be attained, assigns and reviews work of subordinates, evaluates resulting research data, and revises techniques or approaches as needed.

• Exercises considerable initiative in planning and execution of experiments and in evaluating and interpreting the results.

o Analyze bone, fat and muscle in the setting of cancer using various cancer models in vivo and in vitro.

o Study muscle function in various animal models of cancer including various aspects of bone analysis including micro-CT, histology, histomorphometry, bone density, bone marrow fat and body composition by DXA as well as in vitro study of bone, muscle and fat at the cellular and molecular level.

o Molecular biology techniques and analyzing and interpreting next generation sequencing datasets are required.

o Publish papers in the peer-reviewed literature describing the research approach.

• Function independently in the development and initiation of projects as well as support other lab personnel as required.

• Provide development opportunities for techniques, maintain standard operating procedures and ensure the quality and integrity of research procedures.

• Provides expertise, knowledge, or techniques for problem solving.

• Serves as an advisor to the Principal Investigator for improving overall productivity.

• Facilitate scientific collaborations within and beyond the Department.

• Presents findings of research projects and prepares scientific documents for publication.

• Compiles, writes and submits project results to investigator, presents data to professional groups.

• Assists research personnel with compiling, reviewing, editing, advising and submitting research results, including scientific presentations and/or talks.

• Initiate and manage experiments as directed by Principal Investigator and/or goals of the project(s) within the timeframe specified.

• Directs and assists with all procedures and model planning of vertebrate animal.

• Oversees and maintains a clear record of all experimental work performed.

• Oversees the use and operation of laboratory equipment.

• Maintain knowledge of existing and new techniques along with advancement in scientific technology.

• Develop and learn new skills for enhancing research.

2. 2. Laboratory Operations and Compliance • Maintains and ensures a clean and safe laboratory environment.

• Employs working knowledge of Institutional, Federal, State laboratory safety requirements.

• Oversees laboratory safety courses and training as necessary.

• Oversees the laboratory biohazard chemicals and reagents in the laboratory according to safety guidelines. Prepares and coordinates for laboratory inspections and manages the repository of chemicals in the EHS system.

• Provides oversight of vertebrate animal colonies.

• Assigns operational tasks for the maintenance and procedures associated with vertebrate animals.

• Oversees the collection and management of accurate animal surgery records and animal lineage.

• Manages, develops, and updates scientific protocols according to Institutional, Federal, and State regulatory compliance.

• Oversees the laboratory equipment functionality and service maintenance schedules.

• Monitors and coordinates the use of laboratory equipment.

3. Staffing and Training • Assists with the recruitment, selection process, and onboarding of classified research personnel.

• Plans and supervises classified research personnel's work assignments and assists with setting performance goals specific to the objectives to be attained.

• Assists with performance evaluations, revising goal objectives, re-alignment of work structure, and provides assistance with conflict resolution.

• Plans and supervises the training of technicians and other classified research personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, the use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures. Responsible for the delegation and/or conducting of the initial training and introduction of new personnel to the laboratory as related to proper laboratory techniques and use of laboratory equipment, and all laboratory/bio-safety procedures.

• Ensures proper execution and management of all scientific protocols, including providing oversight of collaborator(s) and personnel roles per the aims of the protocols.

• Assists with identifying funding opportunities and provide assistance with grant applications, including editorial assistance.

• Prepares monthly, quarterly, yearly, and as needed reports.

• Assists with preparation and submission of manuscripts, abstracts, presentations and other scientific dissemination outlets.

• Provides purchasing oversight of laboratory services, supplies, chemicals, materials, vertebrate animal acquisition and maintenance, and other required components for projects.

• Oversees inventory of laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment.

• Assists with the acquisition of capital equipment.

• Assists with financial allocability, allowability, and reasonableness for project specific funds, including federal, state and institutional awards.

• Serve as a mentor to research personnel.

• Disseminates information efficiently and effectively.

EDUCATION: PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree.

EXPERIENCE: Five years of experience in experimental or scientific work.
