MD Anderson Cancer Center Radiation Dosimetry Health Physicist in Houston, Texas

Summary: Provides support to the MD Anderson Radiation Dosimetry Services (RDS) Thermoluminescent Dosimeter (TLD) program, which provides independent peer review of radiation delivery machines in clinical radiotherapy centers, research facilities, and blood banks at more than 1600 institutions worldwide. Key job competencies include technical support, research and development, and customer service. Reports to Associate Lab Director and works closely with RDS technical and administrative staff.

Job Specific Competencies

  1. RDS Independent Peer Review Services - Technical Support
  • Provide technical support for the independent peer review service

  • Perform irradiations of standards and controls

  • Verify accuracy of daily TLD calculations and reports to facilities

  • Monitor TLD quantities and commission new TLD batches as needed.

  • Quarterly Quality Assurance of TLD system, including inter-comparison with and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Imaging and Radiation Oncology Core (IROC)- Houston

  • Ensure compliance with environmental health and safety protocols

  • Maintain TLD equipment and advise on repairs/replacements

  1. RDS Independent Peer Review Services - Research and Development

  2. Develop new services, e.g., launch peer review for animal irradiators

  3. Enhance existing services, e.g., streamline processes, update procedures, implementation of new software, database tools, equipment, and supplies

  4. Contribute to RDS projects led by Director or Associate Director

  5. RDS Independent Peer Review Services - Customer Service

  6. Provide customer service to physicists and other staff at outside facilities

  7. Answer technical questions

  8. Manage work flow to meet expected turn-around times and special requests

  9. Inform customers of beams at or near tolerance and help identify possible sources of discrepancies

  • Provides customer service for internal staff

  • Answer technical questions

  • Resolve technical issues related to TLD, equipment, software, processes, etc.

  • Assist with training staff on procedures and processes as needed

  1. Other Duties as assigned.

  2. Perform other duties as assigned by director and associate director.

  3. Provide back up to technicians when needed
