The Department of Epigenetics and Molecular Carcinogenesis is an interdisciplinary, basic science research department that conducts groundbreaking research aimed at defining the mechanisms controlling normal cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, and survival as well as mechanisms controlling genome maintenance to identify the aberrations in these processes that drive cancer.

The Aldaz laboratory studies the role of the Wwox gene in cancer and central nervous system pathologies, genetically engineered mouse models of human disease, plasma cell dyscrasias, determinants of early breast cancer progression and breast and lung chemoprevention.
The primary purpose of the Research Investigator position is to apply technical expertise and experience to coordinate, design, and carry out research projects in the Department of Epigenetics and Molecular Carcinogenesis.
Assist the Principal Investigator with scientific research projects.
Function in a separate and independent manner in initiating, planning and executing experiments to meet project goals, aims or objectives.
Evaluate research data and interpret results.
Determine specific goals or objectives to be obtained.
Advance the aims of the project.
Present findings and write articles for publication.
Represent the lab at conferences and meetings.
Compile, write and submit reports to superiors.
May write grant proposals.
Expertise and Specialization
Support projects for which the incumbent is particularly qualified in terms of training and experience.
Provide expertise in a specific line of investigation and/or expertise in a specialized area of knowledge, skills, training or technology.
Evaluate research project results and develop appropriate responses to resolve problems.
Review scientific findings/articles.
Develop new approaches; introduce new technology; develop new methods and procedures.
Exercise considerable independence in designing, developing, revising techniques that become core technology in the laboratory.
Provide specialized training to laboratory personnel.
Coordinate project related work flowing through the laboratory.
Assign/review work of personnel working on the project.
Maintain laboratory supply inventory; recommend purchases based on anticipated workload and funds available.
Organize repairs, service contracts and recommend replacement or purchase of equipment.
Assure lab spending is charged appropriately to the multiple funding sources supporting the lab.
Ensures that laboratory is prepared for inspection and safety accreditation.

Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.
Required: Five years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, three years of required experience.
Preferred: Previous experience in tissue culture, mouse genotyping and basic molecular biology and biochemistry techniques is desirable.
