SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Safety Specialist position is to provide technical expertise to resolve safety issues involving personnel, visitors, patients and other institutional staff and contractors. Performs and completes special projects as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness with applicable laws, regulations and national guidelines relevant to section functions and responsibilities. Completes environmental and safety policy review and development risk assessment, incident investigations, report writing and presentations to management in order to communicate risk and solutions. Assists in drafting comments on proposed state and federal regulations as needed. Duties may include functions in any or all of the following areas: Fire and Life Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Radiation Safety, Emergency Preparedness and Joint Commission, Environmental Protection, Construction Safety and Biological, Chemical and Laboratory Safety.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Recognize, Evaluate, and Mitigate Hazards - Participates in the management and process flow of various Laboratory Safety programs (laboratory audits, lab moves, safety seal, etc.). Assists in the review and monitoring of programs for effectiveness and efficiency.
- Responds to internal institutional incidents such as hazardous chemical/biological spills.
Compliance - Assists in maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental compliance guidelines and regulations. Provides regulatory interpretations, technical assistance, and recommendations related to laboratory safety programs. Tracks and trends inspection program to create reports and suggestion program directional focuses.
- - Provides training to safety technicians and customers on laboratory safety program management operations, regulations and requirements to maintain compliance.
Conduct recombinant material research protocol review for the Institutional Biosafety Committee.
- Conduct institutional Virus Safety Training and agent-specific safety trainings for clinical trial staff.
Conducts and revises Laboratory Safety program training.
Conducts data analysis for personal protective equipment use, develops targeted program and implements program.
Other duties as assigned.
Participates in on-call working group supporting HazWoper regulations.
A requirement of this position is to be competent and expected to enter data into mobile devices while working away from your workstation, where wi-fi is available. In areas where wi-fi is not available, data is expected to be entered or uploaded at the earliest opportunity
