SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Safety Specialist position is to provide technical expertise to resolve safety issues involving personnel, visitors, patients and other institutional staff and contractors. Performs and completes special projects as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness with applicable laws, regulations and national guidelines relevant to section functions and responsibilities. Completes environmental and safety policy review and development risk assessment, incident investigations, report writing and presentations to management in order to communicate risk and solutions. Assists in drafting comments on proposed state and federal regulations as needed. Duties may include functions in any or all of the following areas: Fire and Life Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Radiation Safety, Emergency Preparedness and Joint Commission, Environmental Protection, Construction Safety and Biological, Chemical and Laboratory Safety.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Recognize, Evaluate, Control, and Mitigate Hazards -Responds and investigates environmental safety - related complaints and incidents such as hazardous chemical, biological, and petroleum product spills. Develops emergency response plans, procedures, and policies for spills and exposures to hazardous chemical, biological, and petroleum products.
Compliance - Assists in maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental compliance guidelines and regulations. Provides regulatory interpretations, technical assistance, and recommendations related to environmental compliance programs. -Supervises and administers the environmental compliance assurance programs for one or more environmental media. Conducts sampling and analysis of one or more environmental media. Utilizes MD Anderson vehicles to transport sampling equipment and containers for environmental media to various sampling points throughout the institution. This also includes conducting weekly, monthly, and quarterly environmental compliance programs inspections.
Program Implementation and Support - Assists the Environmental Protection Manager in completing and managing budgetary documentation and administrative functions necessary to maintain financial accounts. -Coordinates the management and process flow of various waste streams. Assists in the review and monitoring of contract agreements. Regulates departmental records, service agreements and invoices. -Other duties as assigned.
Education Required : Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science or related field.
Licensure Required: Class A, B or C valid Texas driver's license depending on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried and eligible to drive State and institutional vehicles.
