Summary

The primary purpose of the Senior Communications Specialist, Integrated Media, position is to support MD Anderson's social media strategy and program through the development of patient-, survivor- and caregiver-facing social media/digital content; posting to and monitoring organization social media accounts, such as Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.; and acting as a social media "community manager" to build and strengthen relationships online.

The ideal candidate will have experience managing social media for a brand and developing social media content. Experience in healthcare would also be preferred. This position will require occasional onsite visits to our office in the Houston, TX area.

Key Functions

Social Media Program/Project Coordination :

  • Under the direction of the program director, Integrated Media - Social Media, drafts and develops content for the organization's social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and other new and emerging social media platforms, as well as MD Anderson's external Cancerwise blog.

  • Responsible for day-to-day posting, monitoring and response for organizational social media accounts, as well as keeping track of social media trends and changes.

  • Supports MD Anderson's social media/digital presence at relevant oncology conferences and institutional events (including some travel).

  • Collaborates with colleagues to ensure strategic alignment and brand messaging integration.

  • Routinely monitors and responds to customers via organizational social media platforms.

  • Addresses online customer service reviews/complaints through response and collaboration with Patient Advocacy, Risk Management, Legal Services, Human Resources and associated departments.

Online Community Management:

  • Identifies , develops and maintains relationships with key external and internal constituents and clients, including current and prospective patients, caregivers and donors; bloggers, advocacy groups, and experts and thought leaders who are active and influential in social media.

  • Translates relationships into social media content, deliverables and communication tactics.

  • Routinely attends face-to-face meetings with constituents and client leadership, attends key customer meetings and is available for consultation, as needed.

Writing/Editing :

  • Writes and develops content for a variety of audiences (including patients, caregivers, prospective employees, health care professionals, students, trainees, donors, supporters and the healthy public) interacting with MD Anderson's social and digital properties through social media posts (including social videos and Stories), infographics and graphics, podcast episodes, animation scripts, blog posts and development of other materials and content.

  • Translates complex clinical/medical/science information into relevant, compelling and readable content for a variety of audiences.

  • Clear, consistent writing and editing in all work products.

  • Command of Associated Press and MD Anderson style.

  • Proactively tracks down story ideas.

  • Optimizes content for search engines.

Measurement :

  • Tracks and analyzes success of communications, provides status reports and identifies as well as solves potential problems.

Other duties as assigned

Education

Required : Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.

Experience

Required : Four years of experience in public relations, communications, writing/editing or related field. With preferred degree, two years of required experience.

Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
