MD Anderson Cancer Center Senior Financial Analyst - Translational Molecular Pathology in Houston, Texas

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Financial Account Management & Reconciliation Manages the daily operations of the

departmental accounting systems to achieve maximum accuracy and efficiency of all

departmental and grant funds.

• Prepares, analyzes, and reviews financial reports and monitors the budget, income

and expenditures for the department.

• Directs creation of new chart field string accounts, updates to signature

authorization, and initiates account closures as necessary.

• Reconciles all program income generated by CCSG and CBPF funding sources on

a monthly basis to determine if compliance has been met, budget is spent according to

proposed budget and milestones are submitted and delivered to our sponsors.

• Reviews departmental, program, and faculty gifts/donations received and tracks

departmental lab service revenue and study funds into the appropriate accounts.

• Identifies applications or reports to enhance account creation, tracking,

reconciliation and other general accounting practices within the department.

• Serves as department liaison to the division, Financial Controls, and other

institutional contacts and outside agencies to follow-up and resolve financial issues.

• Works closely with Grants and Contracts, Research Administration, and Financial

Controls on effort reporting and budget contracts.

Financial Analysis and Reporting Analyzes all accounting and financial operations on

a continuous basis and makes recommendations for policy and/or procedural change.

• Advises faculty/principal investigators regarding status of accounts and provides

analysis of available funding for personnel salaries and project expenses.

• Verifies availability of funds on accounts for department

financial/purchasing/travel actions.

• Notifies Grant Program Manager and Office Manager of employee fund source

changes necessary to initiate ePAF actions.

• Reviews/explains existing departmental and institutional financial policies and

procedures with faculty and staff as necessary to assist with financial planning efforts and

budget management of accounts.

• Provides direction and supervision as needed to financial and other staff to ensure

deadlines are met and standard operating procedures are followed.

• Utilizes a variety of financial resources to create a comprehensive analysis of

departmental financial activity, including Resource One, OBIEE, Hyperion, and Access.

• Maintains database of all transactions on department accounts under the

guidelines of Financial Controls.

Departmental Budget Preparation/Monitoring Assists the Research Department

Administrator to develop the annual budget for the department.

• Uploads annual budget information utilizing the Hyperion system and analyzes all

activity of prior year expenses, revenue projections, budget revisions, etc. to establish

relative trends and activity patterns.

• Verifies budget maintained in Hyperion for accuracy and are loaded correctly to

the general ledger and monitors budget activity/margins throughout the fiscal year

ensuring the department meets annual fiscal goals and prepares all supporting

documentation for quarterly forecasting of income and expenditure projections (including

capital equipment, FTE & nonpersonnel activity).

• Performs analysis on specific areas or trends and discusses findings with

Department Administrator and/or Chairman as requested.

• Designs complex financial reports to map trends and identify potential budgetary

issues.

REQUIRES COMP APPOVAL BEFORE USE. Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related business speciality. Five years experience in data analysis, accounting or financial project management.
