The primary purpose of the IROC Houston QA Center Sr Machinist and Fab Tech position is to provide highly skilled and specialized work in the design, construction, modification and repair of medical and other scientific auditing equipment and apparatus used by the IROC Houston QA Center and MDADL as it relates to the 2000 radiotherapy facilities worldwide that participate in the IROC Houston QA Center clinical trials program. Provides assistance and guidance with the mechanical design of the apparatus to be manufactured and keeps detailed plans and records of all manufacturing requests.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Design Development, Construction and Repair of Devices
Manufactures and repairs precision and specially designed laboratory apparatus such as phantoms, radiation dosimetry audit tools and machine parts.
Uses CAD and CAM software to program milling machines and other apparatus to design and construct devices required by the IROC Houston QA Center and the MDADL.
Provides the specifications and quantities of the materials needed to manufacture or repair the devices needed for photon, electron and proton dosimetry audits.
Removes, repairs or rebuilds, and replaces parts of scientific, experimental and research equipment and apparatus that are used for IROC Houston QA Center and MDADL purposes, radiation dosimetry or laboratory research.
Operates computerized and manual machines to precisely construct dosimetry and other apparatus as required by the IROC Houston QA Center and the MDADL.
Reviews the designs for completeness, material choice and special requirements as they pertain to the IROC Houston QA Center or MDADL dosimetric needs and can provide guidance for improvement and efficiency.
Understands the properties of the plastics and materials to be used as tissue substitutes for photon, electron and proton dosimetry audits.
Understands how to use, machine, shape, and combine various types of tissue substitute plastics and/or other materials to manufacture required apparatus per the requests of the IROC Houston QA Center and MDADL staff.
Collaboration with Faculty and Graduate Students Understands the medical physics research environment and works with researchers and/or graduate students to design, construct, modify, or repair radiation measurement or other laboratory apparatus.
Assists faculty and students in designing and documenting shop work.
Machine Shop Maintenance Organizes and maintains a clean machine shop to ensure a safe work environment. Works to ensure that the machine shop adheres to all regulations.
Carpentry and Bench Work Performs bench work in the manufacture and modification of parts and equipment as designed or needed by the IROC Houston QA Center in an efficient manner. Uses various types of material and performs skilled or semi-skilled work in carpentry, electricity, sheet metal work, welding, brazing and hard and soft soldering.
Required: High school graduate or equivalent.
Required : Four years of experience in machining, fabrication, engineering, optical/scientific instrument manufacturing or four years of healthcare mold room experience.
