SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the Senior Research Assistant position is to provide assistance, oversight, and special training to less experienced staff in a research environment. The person is also responsible for a series of experiments designed to supply specific information as part of the larger basic research projects. The position contributes to the development of improved techniques, production methods, and/or procedures. Conducts extensive research using complex animal imaging technology.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

  1. Oversee designated aspects in a basic research environment (50%)

The senior research assistant will help the laboratory focused on studying bone metastases. The primary responsibilities will include maintaining mouse colony, performing and assisting with various procedures in mice such as drug treatments, minor survival surgeries, tumor inoculation and tissue collection. Animal work includes the following:

  • Requires significant prior experience in working with mouse models.

  • Proficient in mouse colony maintenance, breeding, weaning, genotyping and euthanasia according to IACUC/NIH regulations.

  • Perform drug administration in mice models.

  • Perform ovariectomy and orchiectomy surgeries, subcutaneous inoculation of tumor, tumor removal and subcutaneous implantation of minipumps.

  • Perform or willing to be trained in intratibial and intracardiac tumor inoculation.

  • Assist the principal investigator in animal imaging techniques including micro-CT, X-ray and DXA. Training will be provided.

  1. Record keeping and Laboratory research (30%)
  • Accurate maintenance of up-to-date animal inventory. Assist with preparation of any reports as needed.

  • Regular communication with the supervisor on the state of animal maintenance.

  • Perform minimal standard molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis.

  • Assist in tissue collection for histology and molecular biology analysis.

  • Provide help in maintaining surgical records, ensure the availability of surgical tools, sutures, anesthetic agents etc.

  • Order primers and reagents needed for genotyping in a timely manner.

  • Must be able to assess proper functioning of related laboratory equipment and notify supervisor of any issues.

  1. Additional Laboratory responsibilities (10%)
  • May supervise, train and coordinate activities of less experienced laboratory staff.

  • Provide technical expertise and suggestion in the design, development and implementation of projects.

  • Willing to learn new techniques and responsible for acquiring continuing education in the various technologies involved in the laboratory research by reading literature and communicating with other industry and lab personnel.

Experience: Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, one year of required experience.

Preferred Experience: Significant experience in working with mouse models and colony maintenance
