MD Anderson Cancer Center Senior Research Assistant - Translational Molecular Pathology in Houston, Texas
The primary purpose of the Senior Research Assistant position is to assist with the planning and implementation of all activities related to pancreatic cancer research projects and lab supervision duties in the laboratory of Dr. Anirban Maitra. Technical experience with histologic processing of tissue, cell lines, and liquid biopsies is highly desirable. Must exercise considerable judgment, initiative and inventiveness in planning and executing the details of experiments and in evaluating and interpreting results. Supervises assigned staff in their work and provides technical training.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Conducts pre-analytical, analytical or post-analytical laboratory tests and procedures
•Experience with liquid biopsies and maintenance of a clinical database.
•Experience with FF and FFPE tissue sectioning, staining and storage.
•Procures biospecimens from the operating room as provided by the surgeons. Works with pathology department to acquire tissue samples per protocols. Will pick up blood samples from the Diagnostic Center and ITB for processing.
•Processes and stores human biospecimen samples, including separation of blood components, isolation of plasma, cells and microvesicles from human biofluids, etc.
•Perform validation, optimization, and troubleshooting of digital PCR protocols as they relate to DNA and RNA analysis from liquid biopsy samples.
•Performs enrichment and processing of circulating tumor cells from patients utilizing antigen independent protocols. Performs downstream analysis of CTCs through immunofluorescence and flow cytometry profiling.
•Performs enrichment of circulating tumor-derived exosomes from patient plasma samples utilizing antibody coupled platforms for immunoprecipitation and downstream DNA and RNA extraction.
•Receives and catalogs all packaging lists of items received.
•Organizes and Maintains Sufficient Quantities of Liquid Biopsy Supplies.
Records and evaluates data in accordance with methods requested. Reports results to appropriate customers to meet productivity goals.
•Maintains lab protocols and MSDS files.
•Exercises considerable imagination, initiative and inventiveness in planning and executing the details of experiments and in
evaluating and interpreting the results.
•Accurately documents all data in personal lab notebook.
•Accurately enters, analyzes and stores all data in the computer
•Performs laboratory work on research project(s) by executing experiments, organizing and discussing the resulting data.
Ensures the laboratory's Safety and Regulatory compliance
• Demonstrates a working knowledge of safety procedures
•Oversees maintenance of hazardous chemical inventory.
•Manages lab MTA agreements for incoming, outgoing materials.
•Ensures all personnel receive all institutionally mandated training and laboratory safety training.
•Responsible for shipping of biohazard and infectious material per MDACC regulations.
•Proper Biohazard waste disposal
•Performs quarterly lab "self" inspections.
Communicates laboratory information in accordance with established policies and procedures.
•Supervises staff and workload for research laboratory and assists them as assigned or delegated.
•Attends the lab meetings and laboratory Managers meeting to discuss concurrent lab related issues and share solutions
•Coordinates training activities.
•Maintains the quality and timeliness of all research laboratory operations within budgetary guidelines.
•Supervises workflow issues, administrative issues, operations and strategic planning issues.
•Assists in preparing IACUC protocols.
•Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills.
•Teaches new students basic molecular biology techniques.
•Assumes shared responsibility for general laboratory maintenance by a) maintaining procedures and protocols that ensure the quality and integrity of procedures performed, b) monitoring work flow as it pertains to the need for supplies, equipment maintenance and preparation of stock solutions, c) keeping ample stock of supplies on hand, d) following up on orders to ensure organization and accessibility of all reagents.
Constructs, assembles and operates laboratory apparatus and equipment.
•Maintains Lab Functions to include ordering of supplies, safety monitoring, and ensuring lab equipment is maintained in good operating order.
•Assists in defrosting and organizing all freezers.
•Supervises the overall appearance, maintenance and proper use of all laboratories and equipment.
•Maintains an excellent working knowledge of all basic laboratory equipment and apparatus.
• Maintains Lab Functions to include ordering of supplies and ensures lab equipment is maintained in good operating order.
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field. Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work.
