The primary responsibility of the Senior M.E.P. Designer position in Facilities Planning, Design and Construction is to provide engineering design support and technical project development related to remodeling, renovation, new construction, and equipment replacement projects. Under the guidance of others the Senior M.E.P. Designer is responsible for engineering design, project planning and programming, and preparation of plans and specifications for projects according to institutional standards. When assigned to lead a design team the Senior M.E.P. Designer is responsible for day-to-day coordination of all project design and production disciplines including architects, engineers, interior designers, and draftsman.


Project Design/Support Assists professional staff to provide engineering design services in the development of construction bid documents including schematic design, design development, and construction drawings and technical specifications with the use of specialized computer software. Complies with applicable building codes and other regulatory requirements governing the provision of design services. Verifies and documents field conditions to coordinate new construction with existing conditions.

Budgets and Design Phase Schedules Adheres to man-hour budgets and design phase schedules developed by others in the delivery of engineering services. Monitors actual man-hour expenditures against budgeted man-hours to measure personal performance. Monitors design phase milestone schedules against actual completion dates to measure personal performance. Refines and improves design processes for continuous quality improvements.

Review Contractor Submittals Assists professional staff review contractor submittals, requests for information, change proposals and other construction administration documents for design intent. Assists professional staff develop construction change proposals to correct design errors and omissions and to implement changes to the scope of work. Periodically observes the progress of projects during the construction phase for purposes of determining compliance with the contract documents. When assigned as design team leader, coordinates the activities of all applicable design disciplines (architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, etc.) in an organized manner to provide for the efficient, cost effective delivery of departmental services and to eliminate design errors and omissions.

Required: High school diploma. Eight years of engineering design experience with an emphasis on the design of facility systems.

Salary Range: $68,400 - $85,500 - $102,600
