MD Anderson Cancer Center Pulmonary Technologist - West Houston in West Houston, Texas

This opportunity is at the MD Anderson West Houston location in a brand new interventional pulmonary procedure suite and pulmonary function lab with the latest technology offering state-of-art care. Training will be conducted at the main hospital campus in the Texas Medical Center for the first 3 months.

Summary

The primary purpose of the Pulmonary Technologist Position is to assist pulmonary physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopies and to perform pulmonary function testing.

The Pulmonary Technologist maintains a high-level of technical competency as it relates to pulmonary procedures and pulmonary function testing, possess up-to-date knowledge in the profession, can collaborate with others, and provides technical expertise as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Pulmonary Procedures:

  • Prepares and sets-up equipment required to perform bronchoscopy procedures. These include: endobronchial ultrasound system, rigid and flexible bronchoscopy systems, fluoroscopy system, argon plasma coagulation (APC) system and cryosurgical system.

  • Prepares catheters and instruments for use, including: pneumothorax catheters, chest drainage catheters, bronchial balloon catheters, APC catheters, biopsy forceps, endobronchial brushes, guidewires and snares.

  • Assist with diagnostic bronchoscopies, bronchoscopy with lavage, bronchoscopy with brushing, bronchoscopy with biopsy, bronchoscopy with transbronchial biopsy, bronchoscopy with fine needle aspiration, bronchoscopy with transbronchial needle aspiration.

  • Assists interventional bronchoscopy procedures, including: endobronchial ultrasound, rigid bronchoscopy, Robotic assisted bronchoscopy with CT guided biopsies, bronchoscopy with tumor debulking and stent placement, and rigid bronchoscopy.

  • Collects and processes specimen including bronchoalveolar lavage, biopsy, brush and fine needle aspiration specimens and places in appropriate preservation and transport media (formalin, RPMI, and ringer's). Prepares cytopathology slides.

Pulmonary Function Testing:

  • Performs spirometry, lung volume, and diffusing capacity testing according to ATS and laboratory standards, ensuring that testing consistently meets standards for acceptability and repeatability.

  • Administer bronchodilator medications as ordered.

  • Perform six-minute walk tests according to laboratory standards.

  • Composes clear and accurate preliminary interpretations of pulmonary function tests and 6-minute walk test results.

EDUCATION

Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care.

EXPERIENCE

Required: Two years of clinical experience in a full service pulmonary function laboratory. With Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care, no experience is required.

CERTIFICATION

Required: Certification by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) in Pulmonary Function Testing. Any employee hired or rehired after September 1, 2006 must possess required NBRC certification.
